Karatu isn't a national park, but a small town that lies between Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, in an area of immensely fertile coffee and arable farms. Karatu sits on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater just below the forest reserve at about 7500 ft above sea level.

The downside of Karatu is that there are no views into Ngorongoro Crater from here. For those you have to stay on the rim, but there are some very good places to stay here which put you in an ideal location to visit Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, both of which are easily accessible by road.

Do you need some help with this?Call +44 (0)1747 898104
At Natural High, we've all lived and worked in Africa, so our knowledge is born of hands-on experience rather than simply visiting on holiday. We can't over-stress how worthwhile it is to take a few minutes to call us. We're not in the business of churning out thousands of packages so if you'd like to discuss things in detail, take a few minutes and call Catherine, Fiona, Vanessa & Alex on +44 (0)1747 898104.

One of the best reasons to stay here is to avoid the large, impersonal lodges on the Crater rim, in favour of one of the small privately owned places in Karatu like Plantation Lodge, Gibb's Farm and Kifaru. At these smaller camps and hotels service and everything other than the view, is generally superior.
