The best times of year for a safari to Katavi National Park

The dry season in Katavi runs between early June and October with the first rains arriving towards the end of October.

This has traditionally been viewed as the best time to go on safari in Katavi National Park as game is probably easiest to see. As the dry season progresses, Katavi becomes drier and hotter and the game more concentrated.

However we are finding that these days, our clients appreciate more subtle distinctions than “dry = good” and “wet = bad”.

The early green season (December to February) can be a stunning time for a safari in Katavi. The national park is incredibly verdant and game is visibly less stressed than at the end of the dry season. You may have to work a little harder than the dry, but much of the behaviour you'll witness is, of course, significantly different than at the end of the dry, because of the dramatic change in environment.

In short, don't rule out the green season in Katavi, just be prepared for the odd shower.

Climate details - Katavi has two seasons,

a dry season from June to October and a rainy season from October / November to May. Annual rainfall is around 900mm with temperatures varying from 18 degrees C to 32 degrees C.
