Escarpments, vast open plains and numerous volcanic mountains dominate the landscape around Lake Natron. The lake has a surreal quality, producing perfect reflections of the extraordinary scenery, whilst from the air the surface is a dynamic collage of patterns produced by algae within the lake's soda. Lake Natron is located North of the Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands in the bottom of the Gregory Rift area of the African Rift Valley. To the south is the active volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai, and to the west, above the rift escarpment, is the edge of the Serengeti National Park. To drive is a long but beautiful journey through dramatic, but harsh territory. Lake Natron is best accessed from an Expedition Camp or a Wilderness Mobile Campen route to or from the eastern Serengeti. This is also the destination for superb walking safaris of several days from the Ngorongoro Highlands or as part of a safari to climb Ol Donyo Lengai The sheer scale of the place is breathtaking. Though you may see game close to Lake Natron, particularly in the wet season, this place is not so much about game viewing as experiencing the awe-inspiring space and immense views. The Ngaresero River provides an extraordinary and truly unexpected contrast to the heat and dust, as it flows clean and cool out of the rift valley wall into Lake Natron. This area is home to nomadic Maasai and it is really impressive to see how they manage to conduct a lifestyle, unchanged for many hundreds of years, in such a harsh environment. This area is definitely for those looking for the more adventurous safari. There are no permanent lodges or camps in the area so this is a place for basic fly camping or light mobiles. There are some fantastic walks, which take a number of days, down from the Ngorongoro Highlands, accompanied by local Maasai guides and whilst in the area it is well worth combining with climbing Ol Donyo Lengai.
