There are no roads to Mahale so the only way to get there is by air. Until very recently the only way to reach it was by private charter, but these days the Tanganyika Flying Company runs flights from Arusha twice a week and to Ruaha and Selous twice a week. The flights generally go via Katavi. They'll also pick you up from Tabora or Kigoma if you come with Precision Air from Dar es Salaam, which is most days.

Once you arrive in Mahale, you land right in the lake shore and are met by a boat for the journey to camp. Greystoke Camp have a particularly beautiful dhow, the Isabella, which usually transfers guests to camp, a journey of around 1 hour and 40 minutes.

When at Mahale you're only a 50 minute flight from Katavi so it makes great sense to visit both since you've come this far.

Flying times are approximately as follows:

Arusha to Mahale 4 hours
Selous to Mahale 4 ½ hours
Ruaha to Mahale 3 hours
Katavi to Mahale 50 minutes.
Driving times: Days and days to get anywhere…

By boat: Not really an option either - it's about 17 hours from Kigoma by dhow or around 9 hours by speed boat, and then you're only in Kigoma…
