by road most of our safaris in Northern Tanzania use a private vehicle and guide, so getting to Ngorongoro is done as a part of your safari which may take in other parks like Manyara and Serengeti.

The drive from Arusha, which is where you are most likely to begin, takes in the order of 4 hours on good quality roads which are now tarmaced all the way to the main gate at Ngorongoro, just below the Crater Rim.

This is a really nice drive to do, past some very pretty scenery - Mount Meru at 15,000 ft, various dormant volcanic hills (Monduli, Burka and Lossimingor at just over 8000 ft) across the floor of the rift valley and around the end of Lake Manyara National Park where you wind your way some 2000 ft up the incredibly dramatic escarpment. Here the views back over Manyara are well worth stopping for.

by air you can fly to Ngorongoro, but you need to be aware that for much of the dry season the airstrip is obscured by low stratus cloud which hangs over the crater rim, making it impossible to see the strip, let alone land. For this reason, most flights to Ngorongoro actually go only as far as Manyara, which still leaves you a 2 hour (far from unpleasant) drive to the Crater.
