Pemba Island is the northern most of the two main islands that make up Zanzibar. It's by far the lesser known of the two and it's only in the last few years that visitors have started coming here. Until the last few years Pemba was hardly visited at all and today still has little in the way of infrastructure for tourism. Whilst making it very appealing this also means that it's not as easy as Zanzibar to get around. There are a couple superb places to stay on the coast offering spectacular snorkelling and diving, but other than that much of the hinterland is more suited to roughing it. The proximity of Pemba to Zanzibar belies the striking contrasts between the islands in almost every other way. Where as Zanzibar is relatively flat over much of the interior and largely given over to coconut plantations, Pemba is far more undulating and lush, with winding roads, thick forests and numerous small hills and valleys. The island was until recently the largest supplier of cloves to the world and throughout the island signs and smells of the spice trade are everywhere. The coast of Pemba is really the main attraction at this stage - the Pemba Channel is world renowned for its fish species holding many of the world records for species such as striped Marlin and the island is home to some of the most pristine reefs in this part of the world. Diving and snorkelling in the area are superb.
