Being only a few hundred feet above sea level, the Selous is rarely if ever cold. It has a coastal tropical climate so can be hot and humid particularly between October and March.
There are two rainy seasons - the short rains, which begin in November and do little more than turn things green, and the long rains which begin in March and end in May.

There are advantages to each season - between December and March the reserve is phenomenally green, the rivers are full, meaning that access by boat is at its best. The birdlife at this time of year is staggering, with many species in breeding plumage and large numbers of migrants joining the already impressive number of residents. This time of year is also good for elephant which are drawn to the marula trees and their sweet plum like fruits. The down side at this time of year is mainly the heat, which can be a problem for some, but most people get used to fairly quickly.

During the dry season, June to October, is the best time to be there if you are looking to fly camp as the camps aren't generally run in the green season because of the chance of rain. At this time of year water sources are more scarce and game is forced to congregate around remaining lakes and waterholes.
