Getting to the Serengeti If you are going on safari to the Serengeti, you'll almost certainly begin in Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania, about 100 miles to the east. This would generally mean that you fly with KLM to Kilimanjaro Airport, 30 miles from Arusha. You might also arrive in Nairobi with BA or Kenya Airways, in which case you'd take a shuttle to Arusha and continue by road or air to the Serengeti. Its worth mentioning that it's no longer possible to drive from the Maasai Mara to the Serengeti and vice versa as the border here is closed. driving - The road from Arusha to the Serengeti National Park runs past Lake Manyara National park and Ngorongoro before getting to the Serengeti. In the last year or so it's been tarmaced all the way to the gate at Ngorongoro , so it's an easy drive and also a very beautiful and worth while one - the transfers between the parks in Northern Tanzania very much form part of the safari. We'd usually recommend driving at least one way on your safari, but wouldn't recommend driving to Serengeti in a single leg as getting to the gate is one thing, but once you've got there you may still have a very long journey to get to camp. Instead we tend to recommend that you make use of the journey to visit Tarangire National Park, Manyara or Ngorongoro en route spending a night or two on the way. Most of our safaris in Northern Tanzania supply you with a private safari guide and vehicle, and the distances between the various parks mean that a gradual progression from one park to the next in the form of a driving safari works very well in this area. The distances are short enough that a day in each place doesn't feel rushed. If you are only visiting the Serengeti, it probably makes more sense to fly. There are scheduled flights to the Serengeti from Arusha every day, and it's easy to connect with virtually any other park in Tanzania. The flight from Arusha takes around 1 hour.
