The Zanzibar coast is the total opposite of the hectic pace of Stone Town - peaceful, laid back and a place to totally unwind. Around the island, particularly on the north and eastern coasts there are some of the most beautiful white sandy beaches imaginable.Whether you are looking to stay on a private island - Mnemba Island - which for location alone is breathtaking or on one of the many beaches around the main island, Zanzibar is incredibly accessible from pretty much any of Tanzania's parks, so combining beach and bush is very straightforward. You can easily leave say the Selous Game Reserve, Ruaha National Park or Serengeti National Park in the morning and be on the beach by that afternoon. Most of the hotels around the coast offer watersports and there are some excellent dive operations as well as opportunities to snorkel, windsurf, kayak or water-ski. The north coast of Zanzibar is also becoming a good spot for kitesurfing. Some places like Matemwe tend to focus on low impact water sports, using native dhows as dive boats and avoiding motorized watersports where possible. Others like the excellent Ras Nungwi, run extensive watersport programs whilst still taking a highly responsible and eco-sensitive approach.
