About Victoria Falls Holidays

Referred to by the locals as Mosi-oa-Tunya or “The Smoke that Thunders”,  due to the cloud of spray cast hundreds of feet in the air above the white water, Victoria Falls’ natural beauty can be seen from over 50km away.

The Falls straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, with the main part of the river toppling over the Zimbabwean side, from which the best views are obtained year round.

In addition to a fine soaking as you view the Falls, you can also enjoy a range of other activities here. You can walk the Falls, take a Microlite trip over the Falls, take a helicopter flight, go white-water rafting and go bungee-jumping.

If you fancy something less adventurous, you can enjoy wildlife watching in the Zambezi National Park upstream of the Falls. The Falls are a particularly fine spot for active families to spend a few days. You will also see those who opt for a civilised gin and tonic on sundowner cruises or exploring the calm nearby areas of the river by canoe.

Some history which you may be interested to know – on the 17th November 1855, David Livingstone was going about his quest to find the source of the Zambezi when he came across the cavernous fault that causes the Zambezi to take a leap of 108m in spectacular style. He was prompted to note that it was pretty impressive, pondered upon the change from a calm and sultry river to an angry, aggressive cascade within a matter of seconds and named the falls after a woman, his Queen.

Top Reasons To Visit Victoria Falls

Often the best safaris involve looking beyond the obvious highlights. It’s about the exhilarating encounters that will make your heart sing. These are encounters that nobody could ever predict, but that make your safari genuinely unique.

Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls

You should time your visit to the Falls depending on what you’d like to do there. For a good view of the falls, you should visit between July and September.

Between May and June, the rainfall can be heavier and you may get ridiculously soaked attempting to get a good photo or even to just simply trying to enjoy the view. As the later months in the year get hotter in Zimbabwe, October and December aren’t the best time to see the Falls as the water can dry up.

If you’re combining your trip to the Falls with a safari in one of the neighbouring parks, it’s best to arrive between May and October when the wildlife action is at its best.

Victoria Falls (FAQS) NEED TO KNOW

How many days do you need at Victoria Falls?

A day or two is normally sufficient to enjoy the Falls and a few of the activities on offer. Make sure you allow enough time for you to take advantage of the activities that you are interested in. However, if a visit to the Victoria Falls is only a part of a wider safari itinerary, you’ll need to factor in time to travel between the parks and areas. Mana Pools, Hwange National Park, Gonarezhou National Park and Malilangwe Reserve are all excellent areas to add to your Zimbabwean itinerary.

What is there to do at Victoria Falls?

As a great start or end point to any Zimbabwean safari there is a huge amount to see and do at Victoria Falls. You can walk the Falls, take a Microlite trip over the Falls, take a helicopter flight, go canoeing, or simply sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery. For thrillseekers, it is possible to go white-water rafting and bungee-jumping at Victoria Falls.

What is the accommodation at Victoria Falls like?

When visiting Victoria Falls, there are a number of accommodation options both on the Zimbabwean side and in Livingstone in Zambia. It is easy enough to cross over between the two countries (although there may be visa costs). Some hotels and lodges are in town itself within easy walking distance of the Falls, while others occupy lovely sites on the Zambezi in the surrounding game park.
