This is so nearly the most idyllic country lodge where you could happily while away a few lazy days before or after a safari. Ngaresero has quite a bit of style and the rooms are comfortable, although rather utilitarian in an expensive sort of way.

The food varies from fabulous to OK. There is a lovely swimming pool, croquet lawn and from time to time there are yoga courses run from here. All being well there are opportunities to walk through the local villages in the foothills of Mount Meru, do short rides or fish for trout in the lake.

The main thing to be aware of is that things can be slightly unpredictable here. To some people this is part of the charm of staying here - it's the opposite of the "chain hotel" experience - and, if you're fairly laid back this is a good choice.

However, if you prefer a more tightly run ship there might be other places in or around Arusha that'll suit you better. Ngaresero is a good one night option if you're happy to enjoy the beautiful location and simply take things as they come.

Location - Arusha

Arusha is the safari capital of Northern Tanzania. The most remarkable thing about it these days is probably the amount of traffic that manages to jam its streets daily. However, it is set in the perfect position for accessing all the major parks in Northern Tanzania, whether by road or by scheduled flight from Arusha Airport.  By contrast with the town, Arusha National Park on the eastern side of Mt Meru is a gem and well worth visiting.
