Ngorongoro Farmhouse is in Ololdukan, about 4kms from the Ngorongoro Conservation area and located with great views of Oldeani. To get to the Crater itself takes about 40 minutes (allow a further 40 or so to get to the Crater floor). This is a working farm with lots of pigs, free range chickens, ducks, rabbits, lambs and cows. Fruit and vegetables are grown and apart from the fish imported from the coast, it aims to be pretty much self sufficient. Alongside being a working farm , this is also a coffee plantation, so your coffee really is freshly roasted. There are essentially 3 camps made up of 13 private cottages all scattered amoungst the coffee plantation - these are all private and are extremely large and light and they have vaulted ceilings which makes them feel even more spacious. Decorated in an old colonial style, using local materials, they're comfortable and clean and understated. They all have their own bathrooms, which have showers and baths - the latter being huge and as a consequence they do tend to take a while to fill up...and the hot water is plentiful but not always available for everyone to have baths and not showers... While Ngorongoro Farm House probably isnt up to the standards of the likes of Plantation Lodge, neither is it as expensive. This is a good place to look at if you're trying to keep costs down and is a good option for families, just do be aware that if all the cottages are full, there can be quite a crowd here.
Location - Ngorongoro
Unique is a thoroughly overused word, but it really does apply to the Ngorongoro Crater. This is the largest unbroken caldera in the world - and it's full of big wild animals. The difficulty here is remembering that what you're looking at isn't artificial. And this becomes harder when you realise the only thing to rival the animal population in Ngorongoro is the tourist population...and for this you must be prepared. Jump to page?
