Sand Rivers Selous is a first-class small safari lodge offering top quality safaris by vehicle, foot and boat well away from the crowds. Few other lodges can rival the views from Sand Rivers; overlooking the Rufiji River at one of its widest points in the Selous Game Reserve, it must have one of the most striking locations of any camp in Tanzania. Built near Kibambawe point on the north bank of the Rufiji River, overlooking a mile-wide stretch of languid water, about 10 miles downstream of Stiglers Gorge, Sand Rivers Selous strikes a balance between luxury and authenticity, giving guests a proper taste of the wilderness of the northern sector of the Selous Game Reserve.
Bee eaters, kingfishers and paradise flycatchers dart backwards and forwards. From time to time, small herds of animals appear on the river banks; waterbuck, elephant, buffalo, drawn to the lush vegetation that grows on the banks of the Rufiji. The view is accompanied by an almost incessant soundtrack of bird and animal noise; fish eagles, emerald spotted wood doves, ring necked doves, hippos.
When it comes to seeing the wildlife, despite the level of comfort here, Sand Rivers has a serious approach to the wildlife with its roots firmly in the tradition of Selous walking safaris. The camp was originally built by Richard Bonham who used this area of the Selous Game Reserve for walking safaris throughout the eighties when the area was all but unknown. Today Sand Rivers still prides itself on the quality of its in-house guides who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable and take enormous pleasure in showing you the great variety on offer.
This is somewhere you will be able to get a superb all round experience of the bush with opportunities for everything from game drives in open sided Land Rovers, walking safaris, boat safaris, flycamps or combinations of all the above. The flexible attitude that they offer here, means that you can pretty much do what you want when you want, so long as it's within park rules and each evening you'll have a chance to discuss and plan your activities for the following day with your guide.
Location - Selous
Vast remote and wild, the Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa and a dramatic contrast to other parks in Tanzania in almost every way. It’s one of Tanzania's lesser known destinations, but offers a grass roots level of experience that few other places can equal. It's also home to an intriguing diversity both in terms of animal life and variety of experience on offer. Jump to page?
