Oliver's Camp is perhaps best known for the walks pioneered by Paul Oliver. It's one of Tanzania's best bush camps and with it's excellent in-house guides, offers one of the better quality game experiences in Tarangire. The camp has recently moved to a beautiful area of the park close to the Minyonyo pools, one of the last bastions of proper wilderness in this area of Tarangire (unless you're prepared to head further south still, towards Mkungunero on a walking safari which is a whole different ballgame) Read more?
Even the Minyonyo area is well beyond the reach of most tourists who visit Tarangire and if you're looking for a richer, less trodden Tarangire experience, this is definitely one of the camps to consider. The design of the camp very much reflects the desire not to leave any permanent mark on the area. Whilst Oliver's is very comfortable and well run by the small dedicated crew, it's not the place to go if your priorities are luxury.
From this area you have access to the main Tarangire River which tends to be the focus for much of the game as the dry season progresses, but you can also explore the much less known wilderness area off road in places and also by foot. The camp is well placed for the herds of migratory animals that flood into the park at the beginning of the dry season and out again onto the Maasai Steppe and rift valley in November.
One note of caution. In certain conditions the tsetse fly in this area can be pretty brutal. Not such a drama on walks, they can sometimes demand your considerable attention on game drives. Having said that, they are in part responsible for the wonderful wilderness feel of this area, acting as they do as a natural filter of dedicated travellers from casual tourists. Location - Tarangire and Surrounding Areas
Tarangire is particularly worth visiting in the dry season when the Tarangire River is one of the few sources of permanent water in the area. Consequently, it attracts large numbers of animals (most notably elephant, wildebeest and zebra) from the surrounding Maasia Steppe. Jump to page?
