Echo Beach is located on Bweju Beach, a 10 minute walk along the beach from Breezes. Small, relaxed, stylish, professionally managed and yet great value, for the right kind of guest this is fast turning into one of our favourites on Zanzibar. Read more?

Set up in December 2007 by Sue and Andrew Page, an English couple with 14yrs experience running a hotel in the Loire, Echo Beach is already enjoying excellent reports for its overall quality and special feel. It has just 11 villas, all two storey and facing the sea they are set around the pool and within a few steps of the beach. Rooms are simple with large wooden 4 poster beds and clean but straightforward bathrooms. The restaurant and bar share one area, sadly with a glass wall separating you from the beach, which comes into its own when the southern monsoon blows. Thatched beach umbrellas lure guests away from the pool to the beach which is still mercifully quiet and devoid of too much hassle.

This is an ideal hotel for those seeking solitude and peace. In fact its almost guaranteed as children aren't really encouraged, with the Page's making a conscious effort to limit numbers to 'controllable levels' (which in my experience means none). You won't find spas, fitness centres or numerous dining options here (although guests can use all the Breezes facilities just up the beach) but you will find simplicity, rooms which really are steps from the beach and a quiet but hands-on owner management which is always a plus.

Location - Zanzibar

Zanzibar along with nearby Pemba Island lies just off the coast of Tanzania and is a heady mix of tropical island life and historic Swahili culture that has beckoned travellers for centuries. During our years of living and working in Tanzania, we often took time out here, and have wound our way through Zanzibar's crumbling streets and padded along the miles of soft white beaches working out how to make the most of this fabulous island.
