In our opinion if you compare the boutique hotels and the Serena Inn, is that the Serena Inn is the safest bet for Stone Town Zanzibar. We were pleasantly surprised by the Serena, the conversion from two old merchants houses has been done beautifully. Read more?
It is the only hotel that is right on the sea wall and has a pool. There is only so much time that you want to wander around the streets of Stone Town and after that retreating to a hotel with a pool, outside sitting areas and a wonderful sea view is infinitely preferable to returning to a dark hotel whose only outside space is at the top of the building entailing quite a haul up and down steep stairs.
