Luxury may not be everyone's primary objective when visiting Tanzania, but if you're looking for a safari that's out of the ordinary, where you can spoil yourself in considerable style, but still fit in a bit of quality game viewing between the gin and tonics, there are a few places in Tanzania that really fit the bill. Here are the best luxury safari experiences in Tanzania.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge has a lower profile than many of its sister lodges, but we feel this is one of the best of it's kind if you are looking for a little indulgence. A serious approach to guiding also means that you get to see the best of the park in the hands of guides who know it extremely well.

Mahale Mountains National Park

Conventional luxury would really be out of place in so remote a spot as Mahale Mountains National Park. Fortunately there is nothing conventional about Greystoke Camp. This is the epitomy of luxury embodied by real escapism; a chance to remove yourself entirely from the sphere of your normal life and indulge the highly unusual, but hugely rewarding experience that the camp offers.

Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is one of the better known luxury lodges in Tanzania. Much of it's appeal is the truly exceptional views it has from it's prime location, perched on the rim of the Crater. This really is somewhere you can sit, drink in hand, and watch the game (albeit rather small as it's a few thousand feet away) scattered below you. If you're after sunken baths, massages, personal butlers and a smattering of game, then this is the place for you.

Ruaha National Park

Jongomero Camp is not only a superbly constructed tented camp, with high attention to detail in all areas, but also a small camp that adheres to the values of the best bush camps. This is somewhere you'll be away from the crowds, but in the company of good guides and good game viewing.

Selous Game Reserve

Sand Rivers is a small luxury lodge that sits on the northern bank of the Rufiji River. Despite the considerable comfort that it offers, this place is also about a great deal more than conventional hotel style luxury. Real imagination infuses the design of the rooms and the quality of the guiding here is extremely high, whether you choose to walk, drive or take boat safaris.

Serengeti National Park

We'd advise that you avoid the large lodges in the Serengeti, but there are a number of small ones as well as some superb tented camps that offer real luxury, while still giving you a highly original game experience in the hands of experienced guides.

Zanzibar Coast

There's an awful lot of noise about luxury on Zanzibar, so the currency tends to get a bit debased. However, if you're after something exceptional few people would argue that Mnemba Island isnt one of the most luxurious and unusual places to stay. Fundu Lagoon on Pemba Island is also an excellent choice.
