Safaris are partly about indulging your inner child, so it's no surprise that Tanzania has a lot to offer if you're looking for a family safari. There are a number of places that offer a great deal more than simply game driving (which can be tedious for small children after a while).Ngorongoro Crater is particularly good for a family safari with smaller children as game is plentiful and not shy of vehicles, but there are many places suitable for older children who are probably more interested in excitement. What's more Tanzania is particularly blessed by having the Zanzibar Coast close by, so just when you never want to see another wildebeest, you can hit the beach and switch off. Here are the places we have found are best for family safaris.
Lake Manyara National ParkLake Manyara is somewhere that is well worth visiting as part of a family safari. Like the Ngorongoro Crater, this is somewhere you can quickly see some big wild animals, not to far from the vehicle. Distances aren't large, so chances of children getting worn out are slim. As importantly Lake Manyara Serena Lodge has one of the best swimming pools in Tanzania and it's only a stone's throw (OK it would have to be quite a throw) from the park and has magnificenmt views of the lake from the pool. Mahale Mountains National ParkMahale could sound like a strange choice for a family safari as children under 12 arent allowed to see the chimps. However, in every other respect this place is pretty much child heaven. A beautiful beach, a camp that is like one big tree house fantasy and superb places to explore, by boat and in the water snorkelling. Ngorongoro Crater and HighlandsNgorongoro Crater is probably the first place you should think of for a family safari, particularly with young children. Game is plentiful, the terrain is fairly open and the animals are used to vehicles so big exciting things like elephant, lion and even rhino (this is the only place you'll see these in Tanzania) will ignore you almost to the point of rudeness. It's nice to see some of these things without having to use binoculars too much at first, then you can (and should) move on to some of the wilder parts like the Serengeti National Park. Ruaha National ParkRuaha is an exciting place for a family safari and is ideally suited to slightly older children (or at least children who are likely to have a real interest in the animals). This is somewhere you are quite likley to see exciting things happening and in the company of a good guide this can be a real eye-opener for children (and adults). Chris Fox at Mwagusi Safari Camp is an excellent host for children with a real passion for animals and adventure, having spent much of his childhood indulging his own passion. Selous Game ReserveThe Selous is an ideal place for a family safari because of the wide range of safari activities available. Walking safaris (which probably arent ideal for small children), boat safaris and fly camping (sleep out under the stars), not to mention game driving in open sided vehicles. This is also somewhere you can go fishing and there are a couple of superb camps which have swimming pools for the heat of the day. Serengeti National ParkSerengeti is the obvious choice for a family safari if your children are genuinely interested in animals. The quantity of animals and the huge number of different species that they can tick off, is hard to rival any where else. If you manage to get them to the Zanzibar CoastZanzibar is the obvious place to take your children as part of a family safari and is one of the reasons that Tanzania is such a great place to head with your family. White sandy beaches, sun and sea. The rest is obvious...
