Wherever you go on safari, animals are generally much less shy of vehicles than they are of people on foot. In many of the parks they all but ignore vehicles altogether, so for for photography in particular, opportunities from a vehicle are excellent.

Northern Tanzania safaris - that is safaris to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire - are done with a private vehicle (Landrover or similar, not a minibus) and private safari guide throughout. A safari of this type works particularly well in this part of Tanzania because of the proximity of the major parks to each other, and to Arusha, where the safaris generally begin. With a private vehicle and guide you have the luxury of real flexibility in planning your daily safari activities, which is, after all, what safaris are all about.

Southern Tanzania safaris and Western Tanzania safaris work a little differently because of the greater distances involved. Guests fly in to be met by camp guides. Here the great advantage of the vehicles is that they're open sided, so all round visibility is great, not to mention the breeze... The safari camps we use in these areas all take enormous pride in the quality of their guides.

Katavi National Park

If you're looking for game drives in open vehicles in an area where there is little or no infrastructure, then Katavi is very hard to beat. Much of the driving is off road and the density of game, particularly in the dry season makes for excellent viewing.

Best place to stay Chada Camp

Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands

If you haven't been on safari before and particularly if you are a keen photographer or travelling with children, then the Ngorongoro Crater offers exceptional game viewing. Animals are, for the most part, used to vehicles and will all but ignore them and this is somewhere you should find yourself up close and personal with a good number of large mammals. It's also the only place in Tanzania that you have a realistic chance of seeing black rhino in the wild.

Best place to stay Ngorongoro Crater Lodge or Ngorongoro Wilderness Mobile

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha has some of Tanzania's best game viewing, particularly in the dry season (June to October), when game is drawn to the rivers to drink. You need to take your time here - minimum 3 days - but in that time you have a very good chance of seeing many of the major species as well as some of the less common ones like Lesser Kudu.

Best place to stay Mwagusi Safari Camp

Selous Game Reserve

Game viewing in the Selous is by open 4 wheel drive vehicles and is particularly good in the dry season. There's a considerable amount of contrast in scenery (lakes, plains, woodland, rivers) with some highly unusual drives like those down the beds of dry sand rivers where large herds of game (including extraordinarily large numbers of giraffe) gather in the evenings.

Best place to stay Sand Rivers or Selous Safari Camp

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park is quite simply one of the best places for game driving in the world. If you're going to northern Tanzania then the scale and variety of the Serengeti make it the obvious place for the focus of your safari.

Best place to stay Nomad's Serengeti Safari Camp

Tarangire National Park

In the dry season - from July to October - the Tarangire River attracts very large numbers of animals to drink. This can be an excellent place to spend a few days at the beginning of your safari to clock up a few of the major species. The park is diverse and (though not large) large enough not to be always accompanied by other tourists.

Best place to stay Oliver's Camp
