This dreamy and whacky African gingerbread house is set on a tributary off the Zambezi River and facing the Lower Zambezi National park with its spectacular escarpment backdrop.  Chongwe River House is a uniquely designed creation of Neil Rocher who made his name with Shampole Lodge in Kenya. The building is a free-form, undulating structure molded around the organic shapes of twisted branches with not a straight line in sight: the fraggle rock cave dwelling of Zambia with a designer twist, fit for Barney Rubble . Water flows under low bridges in the sitting area of the main house and all the furniture is brilliantly hewed out of one single fallen winterthorn tree.

This would be prefect as family house or for a group of friends travelling together. There is a resident guide, Brendon, originally from Malawi, who can or cannot host the group, but who does all the walks, drives and river trips. There is also a cook, butler, maid etc, so you are totally spoilt. There are four huge bedrooms, 2 upstairs and 2 downstairs looking out over different parts of the river, There have vast double beds (which can be made single and a third bed added in some cases). They are all open (so you would have to be prepared for some insects particularly towards the rains) with mosquito nets and some really fantastically designed bathrooms with unique showers. The main living area is huge, extremely comfortable and fun. This would be a better option than being self contained at Chongwe River Camp as you are further up the river and can be totally private.

Jason and Clem run Chongwe River House, they have a young family and have come from the Luangwa Valley.   Jason is a superb guide and has an air of quiet confidence about him which we really liked.

Location - Lower Zambezi

Lower Zambezi National Park, in the south central part of Zambia, lies on the banks of the Zambezi River some way down stream from Kariba Dam and well below the Victoria Falls. The river is more than a mile wide at places and the current is generally languid as the river makes its way gradually towards Mozambique. Jump to page?
