Victoria Falls
Livingstone is a buzzy little place, quite literally as there are helicopters and microlites zipping around overhead. There are a growing number of hotels and lodges, some large hotel chains, other small, owner managed lodges - these are often away from the noise and bussle of the main town. Read more?
The focus is on the Victoria Falls and the views of the Falls are extremely good from the Zambian side. Make sure you have some waterproof equipment for your cameras as visiting the Falls, particularly after the rains is a bit like having a very high powered rather cold shower!
All the activities are well organised and efficient. There is a friendly feel to the area and it should be considered, not just as for a quick visit to the Victoria Falls, but as a place to really relax, either before or after a safari. It is also somewhere where you can have fun, particularly for families as there really is a huge amount to do, although you do have to budget the extra activities into any safari.

Microlite over the Victoria Falls.
This is a 15 minute flight and some of the magic is taken out by the fact that it is a bit like queuing up for a fair ground attraction and the poor pilots just go up and down every 15 minutes. It is however an exciting way to see the Falls and really appreciate how huge they are, but also how narrow the chasm that the water falls into. You can also see where over 1000’s of years the Falls started. You are linked into the pilot who gives information on the Falls and then you fly back along the river, looking down at hippos that look like fat slugs!
Helicopter flight
Here you fly over the falls and then fly down in the gorge up to the falls which is quite spectacular. As with the microlite flights, you can do 15 minutes or 30 minute flights. You have to be aware that in the helicopter, the best view is in the front seat and there were complaints when we were there that people could not see well out of the back seats.
Walk the Falls.
This is a very wet experience particularly in during and after the rains. You can also cross over to Zimbabwe to view the falls, but this is quite difficult as you have to go through the border control which takes a long time and can be quite unpleasant and expensive as you have to pay a $35.00 visa entrance fee.
White Water Rafting:
These are all day or half day trips and in the dry season start right under the falls. When the river is high, they start further down. It is a steep climb down into the gorge and a very steep climb out – although there is now a cable car, but it is not always working.
Other activities:
Elephant back safaris – whole day or half a day.
Quad biking.
Riding.
