Masoala National Park camps - Masoala Forest Lodge
Masoala Forest Lodge
Reached only by foot or sea, Masoala Forest Lodge offers the best standard of accommodation in the isolated national park of the same name. It is a very comfortable base from which to explore the forests, beaches and marine reserve in this remote area.
With a large focus on sustainability the lodge aims to give back anything taken to run it. Materials used are locally sourced and food is bouthgt from the local community. Service is friendly, intimate and efficient and the guides are expert at finding the wildlife; guided walks into the surrrounding rain forests are made in the both during the day and night.
The main building is of local wood and palm thatch while the seven tented rooms sit on palm thatched stilted wooden platforms with uninterrupted views of the forest canopy and sea. Each has attached bathroom with hot water shower and a veranda complete with a hammock to lounge in. Solar generated electricity (plus a back-up generator) means power is available 24/7. The main beach house overlooks the beach and Antongil Bay and serves as a communal dining, lounge and bar area. An additional deck overhanging the rocks and sea provides a further viewing platform at breakfast, tea and sunset.
There is also access to Tampolo Parc Marin, where there is fantastic snorkelling from the beach. Sea kayaking is a great way to explore the reefs, islands and secluded beaches nearby and instruction is available for those new to paddling. Fishing and whale watching excursions are also available at extra cost and are seasonal.
For those wanting to learn more about Malagasy culture, there are community trips where you can lunch with a local family and visit their farm which provides a valuable source of income for local communities.
Recommended access is by twice weekly (Wednesday and Sunday) shared charter flight from Antananarivo to Maroansetra, from where it is two hours by motorboat across Antongil Bay to the lodge.
