Fes camps - Dar el Ghalia
Dar el Ghalia
In common with all riads, Dar El Ghalia, is indistinguishable from its neighbours, a blank high sided building but when you push open the door you enter another world.
Inside is a tall courtyard full of light and colour. Tiled floors, palms, a fountain, delicately painted wooded screens, banquettes padded with silk cushions. Public rooms lie off the courtyard along with some bedrooms while others are on the second tier. Owned and personally managed by Omar and Nadia Lebbar, in whose family the riad has been for 300 years, the place has a feel of a private home rather than a hotel. Time worn furniture and traditional furnishings - there is nothing here of the uber stylish French approach found in many other riads. Here is real tradition and also real hospitality. The staff are uniformed and endlessly attentive. They love children and this is an ideal riad for a family with a choice of six small bedrooms with bathrooms, four junior suites, each with bedroom and sitting room and a Royal Suite with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a central sitting room with fireplace. All rooms have heating and air conditioning
The excellent Dar Tajine restaurant here is one of the best known in Fes and offers dishes such as briouates (spicy dumplings) and chwa'k dar (beef tagine). There are panoramic views of the medina and thousand minarets from the roof top terrace and the riad also has a hammam. There is no pool here so for the hot summer months, a family might prefer to chose a riad or hotel with a pool. It is perfectly situated for exploring the medina.
