EXPLORE

Bazaruto Archipelago Holidays

A group of idyllic islands off the coast of southern Mozambique, the Bazaruto Archipelago lies not far off the mainland at Vilanculos with the stunning Bazaruto Island being the largest of five islands.

Known for the high quality of marine life, empty beaches and crystal seas, the islands make a fantastic destination if you are looking to relax, but it also has plenty to do if you want to explore or take part in some physical activities.

Aside from the long beach walks, sea swims and relaxing with a book under a palm tree, there are a variety of watersports on offer from fishing to diving and boat trips to explore the two uninhabited islands of Santa Carolina and Santa Isobel.

The feel here is very much laid-back, easy freedom with high standards of service and options to do more if you are so inclined. Between Bazaruto and Benguerra Islands, there are a good range of accommodation options to suit the rustic-loving hermits and those with families who would like a bit more in the way of amenity.

Top Reasons To Visit Bazaruto Archipelago

Often the best safaris involve looking beyond the obvious highlights. It’s about the exhilarating encounters that will make your heart sing. These are encounters that nobody could ever predict, but that make your safari genuinely unique.

Best time to visit Bazaruto Archipelago

Bazaruto Archipelago has a tropical climate and is warm all year. The best time to visit is determined by the aims or activities you have planned for the duration of your trip.

The cooler winter months and dry season runs from May to November. This tends to be the most popular time to visit, as the heat isn’t stifling and there is less chance of rain, meaning more time for sunbathing or water-based activities.

That being said, the Indian Ocean is always warm and scuba diving conditions tend to be good all year. Migrating humpback whales can be spotted from June to September and the best time to see whale sharks is October to early December. You can also experience world-class fishing – marlin fishing is best from September to January and sailfish from May – September.

If you visit during February or March, it is best to be prepared for occasional downpours of rain.

Bazaruto Archipelago (FAQS) NEED TO KNOW

Is it possible to combine a trip to the Bazaruto Archipelago with a safari on the mainland?

Yes. All of our trips are tailor-made and will be created after consultation with you. Though exhilarating, safaris can be tiring experiences made up of treks, guided walks and a lot of early get-ups. A trip to the Bazaruto Archipelago is a great way to unwind at the end of a trip to Mozambique. The islands are utter bliss and provide the perfect backdrop for reminiscing about everything you’ve experienced in this stunning country. Bazaruto combines brilliantly with South Africa and we’d highly receommend the Waterberg area, a superb alternative to the busy Kruger National Park.

What is the accommodation like in the Bazaruto Archipelago?

The accommodation on the five islands rivals the very best, from high-end luxury to more cost-efficient options. There are a range of accommodation types including resort-style, hotels and lodges; some more geared to families and some towards couples/adults only. All deliver an exceptionally high standard of amenities and can organise boat trips and water-based activities.

What activities are there to do in the Bazaruto Archipelago?

The Bazaruto Archipelago was made for relaxation, with long stretches of sun-drenched sand and crystal blue seas. The beaches are truly idyllic and it’s worth visiting as many as possible, alongside the charming local villages that harbour them. If you want to do something more active, snorkelling and diving is highly recommended – the coral remains largely untouched and the marine life is spectacular. You can spot up to three types of turtle, humpback dolphins and the elusive dugong. Mostly, the islands enjoy a relaxed, chilled-out vibe and we would encourage you to do the same.
