Central Highlands camps - Erongo Wilderness
It’s wonderful when you arrive at a place and haven’t realised it until the last minute. Hidden cunningly amongst some fairly impressive granite boulders, Erongo Wilderness is a small tented lodge that offers a pleasant antithesis to the manic, bouncy safari days of the more game-rich areas. The lodge is located on land which was formerly devoted to commercial farming and is now a large conservancy for wildlife.
If you time your arrival right here (i.e. in the middle of your hectic schedule), you’ll really appreciate the peaceful surroundings, the opportunity to stretch your legs on drawn-out sundowners atop the kopjes enjoying the lovely views, and simply relaxing by the plunge pool. That’s not to say that there is little to do. In fact, for birders especially, this is paradise. There are a couple of specials here including the rosy-faced lovebirds...chirpy little toy-like balls of feathers. You can also find the Herero chat and Damara rock-runner.
On walks and drives, you are likely to see rock hyrax (in residence around the camp too), oryx, greater kudu, playful baboons and the Damara dik dik. You can take pleasant drives around the conservancy where there are also leopard and rhino but these are pretty illusive. We’d recommend a trip to Paula’s Cave, though, to see some pretty vivid rock paintings which are seen by only few people.
The tents are tucked around the rocks and there is an attractive stone lounge and dining room perched on top. There is definitely an argument for doing very little for at least some of your time here.
