Arusha camps - Mount Meru Game Lodge
Mount Meru Game Lodge
Mount Meru Game Lodge was established in 1959 by Dr Andrea Von Nagy and is located in a beautiful setting, beside several age old mango trees, with an adjoining sanctuary. A large converted farmhouse, full of archways leading into different areas of the interior - the lodge is now leased & managed by Mark Lawson and team.
The decor is simple and somewhat random giving the impression that bits and pieces have simply been added over the years without too much thought to the overall interior design. All the bedrooms vary in size and decoration and many have recently been decorated. The accommodation at the back has river views and is generally more private, whereas the other rooms towards the front have less privacy but nice views directly onto the pond and sanctuary area beyond it.
The food is good with great attention to detail which is served in what must once have been a grand dining room, looking out over the extensive lawns and gardens. There is a lovely shaded terrace at the front for both drinks and dining on fine days. Thankfully most of the sanctuary residents have moved on now and all that remains is an assortment of plains game with the odd ostrich and warthog, all of whom seem very happy with the easy life they lead in the open sanctuary area.
Good fun for kids, particularly at the start of a safari and with the attention to detail of the current management we consider this a good alternative for any overnight stay in Arusha.
