Lake Eyasi camps - Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp
Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp
Kisima Ngeda is a small tented camp on the shore of Lake Eyasi, a large soda lake that lies in the floor of the rift valley under the Ngorongoro Highlands. It's a great example of a well-run, owner-operated camp, set in the shade of a grove of doum palms, on the eastern shore of the lake. Views across the soda lake to the 3000 ft escarpment on the other side are magnificent.
The camp belongs to Chris Schmelling - whose family have been farming in the area for many years - and George Mavroudis. The camp is supplied at least in part by the superb food - including smoked tilapia fillet and black forest smoked ham -that they themselves produce on the farm. This area is where the Wahadzabe hunter-gatherers live. Having grown up in the area, Chris knows many of the tribe well and it's fascinating to spend some time with them seeing the way they live.
There are only seven tents, each of which is built under a thatched structure, ingeniously made almost entirely of palm (thatch and poles) and with scrupulous attention to the use of ecologically sound materials. There are no pretensions here (no sign of rose petals on the pillow) and the excellent service combined with a simple elegance, makes this camp very appealing for a night or two.
The recent addition of a swimming pool makes this a great place to be able to kick back and do nothing fow a while. The location of this camp is scenically stunning with great views to the north of the Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands with Lemagrut and Ol Deani mountains (both extinct volcanoes and close to 10,000 ft) in the foreground.
