Ngorongoro Crater camps - Rhotia Valley
Rhotia Valley is situated on the edge of the Ngorongoro Reserve at around 1400m overlooking the tropical rainforst of the Rift Valley and Lake Manyara.
Accommodation is in 15 spacious tents with private verandas and en suite showers and loos all set up on permanent wooden platforms overlooking the valley. There are comfortable double or twin beds, in which hot waterbottles are put on chilly nights.
The rustically furnished dining room has an open fire which is lit each night. Food is simple but wholesome and locally produced and there's a swimming pool too.
What makes Rhotia Valley Lodge special - and in fact its main purpose for existing - is that 20% of the proceeds from the camp goes to the children's orphanage next door. The owner left her native Holland, where she was a doctor, to build this small camp to support the home whcih includes a medical centre, shop and classrooms. There are also three houses taking 12 children with each house being under the guidance of a 'mother'.
Short safari outings to Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater are on offer, as are longer excursions to the sourthern Serengeti or Empakaai Crater. Alternatively relax back at the lodge in the pool or go for a stroll around camp. If you want to get the blood pumping again you can take out mountain bikes from the lodge or go on a guided forest walk. For those guests who are interested, a visit to the orphanage can be arranged or dinner can be taken with the children, eating under the stars. Your stay at this lodge will direclty improve the living standards of disadvantaged children in Tanzania.
As well as being ideal for Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, there are guided cultural walks, forest walks with NCA rangers. Mountain biking and visiting the children’s home.
Usually booked on a full board basis with separate private guide and vehicle. Leave time to see the children’s home if interested. Drinks, laundry and other excursions not included in the cost.
