Kafue National Park camps - Musekese Safari Camp

Musekese Safari Camp

If a camp could be cloned and replanted in every wild place worth visiting it would be Musekese as it's everything that a safari camp should be – small, original, owner-operated with superb guiding, all set in a fascinating area with masses to see and do.

Musekese is not the most photogenic of camps, nor does it command the most stunning position, the tents are not particularly spacious and the fare, although very good, is no better than what has come to be expected.

But as with many of the best camps the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Musekese feels exceptionally fresh and alive and it is without doubt a leading-light in the current renaissance of the gigantic Kafue National Park.

Owner-host-guides Phil Jeffery and Tyrone McKeith have spent years in the park and have a fanatical zeal for every aspect of it.

Refreshingly youthful in their approach, as witnessed in their embracing of modern tools such as camera-traps and quadcopters which have taken a long time to permeate into the sometimes somewhat staid safari-world, their exuberance belies a depth of knowledge and a quest to discover more that is a joy to witness.

Located in the game-rich and historically well protected Lufupa area of the park, the camp is accessed is by a 15 minute boat trip from the incongruously named 'harbour'.

Day and night game-drives here are generally very productive, while cruising the Kafue in their large, quiet, comfortable and stable flat-bottomed boat definitely adds another dimension. The local walking country is superb – totally road-free and very varied, and there are options to explore more deeply by way of stripped-down fly-camping.

Accepting a tolerance to tsetse fly (which is a factor through most of this park), we can not think of why anyone with some spirit of adventure still coursing through their veins would not want to include Musekese as part of a Kafue safari. It combines superbly with a stay on the Busanga Plains in the north and the extremely beautiful Kaingu area in the south, but also works well as a stand-alone option for those not wanting to dedicate too much time to this vast park.

Musekese is most definitely worth a special journey rather than a mere detour.
