Liuwa Plains

This remote park situated in the far west between the Luambimba and Luahinga Rivers is dominated by massive grassy plains. The game-viewing can be spectacular as the wildlife is abundant. with zebras, several different species of antelope, predators including lion, cheetah and particularly large hyena.

Liuwa boasts the second largest wildebeest migration in the world, numbers peak in November/December and May but there are always some around who have not followed the herds to Angola. The birdlife is also excellent as vast numbers of water birds congregate at the drying pools. Photographers may be attracted to the fields of wild-flowers in the early part of the dry season and the specactular skies that mark the coming of the rains.

The park has benefited massively in recent years from the support of African Parks who have implemented an ambitious project to protect and rehabilitate the park by re-introducing several key species.

Norman Carr Safaris have recently taken over the tourism concession for the park and are developing Kokomo Camp on a fixed departure basis from May to December, the park being only accesible in the dry season. Liuwa has a reputation for being best to visit in either May or December but in truth it is worth considerring at any time of the season when it is arguably more rewarding to incorporate other of Zambia's star attractions.
