Shiwa Ngandu Estate

Established as a personal fiefdom just after the Great War (think Downton) complete with with schools, a hospital, citrus plantations and the eponymous manner house, Shiwa today remains a private estate in the hands of the family of the original founder.

Geographically remote, it is nearer to the DRC, Tanzania and Malawi than Lusaka or the Copperbelt, and being almost a mile above sea level, Shiwa has a very different feel to the rest of the country. Set across the watershed from the Zambezi-Luangwa-Kafue system that drains in to the Indian Ocean, any rain falling here flows in to the Congo and out in to the South Atlantic.

Having suffered more than its fair share of tragedy over the intervening years Shiwa Ngandu continues to survive and indeed flourish and is a fascinating aside to a conventional safari.
