South Luangwa National Park camps - Chikoko Tree Camp
Chikoko Tree Camp
There's something about being in an area where there are no roads and everything around you has got there on foot. Perhaps it's just the idea that there are still those places on our crowded planet where you can escape the hustle and noise of modern life and rejoin the natural environment.
Chikoko Tree Camp is just such a place. Re-built every season from skilfully crafted, locally available materials, the camp is about as organic as you can get. Bedrooms of reed and thatch with smooth matting floors are raised into the canopy where you are surrounded by constant birdsong. Below, open-air showers with hot water, and a flush loo mean that you don't have to sacrifice too many creature comforts.
Chikoko, along with Crocodile River Camp, provides an interval in walking safaris from Tafika Camp. Essentially, you cross the Luangwa River and walk at a leisurely pace, with your guide and all important tea-bearer, for around four hours to one of the camps. A couple of nights can be happily spent enjoying shorter walks in the varied bush around the camps. Old oxbow lakes, grassy pans and wooded riverbanks make for excellent bird and game viewing. Then you walk on to explore the next camp.
Chikoko functions seamlessly courtesy of a small, friendly team of staff who have been in the area for donkey's years. Meals are cooked over an open fire or in the earth oven and you'll be impressed with the delicious concoctions that appear from the kitchen.
Includes full board accommodation, scheduled activities, soft drinks, beer, house wines and local spirits, park fees where applicable. Does not include special activities, premium wines, champagne and spirits, gratuities, items of a personal nature.
