Victoria Falls - Livingstone camps - Islands of Siankaba
Islands of Siankaba
When you can open your eyes and look out over a river running right below your wooden balcony and all you can hear are the sounds of hornbills and the shallow rapids nearby, you really do feel as though you’ve properly escaped. It only takes a few minutes by boat to reach this little spot but the psychological jump is huge... the idea of kicking of your shoes and spending the afternoon in a hammock seems like the best idea in the world.
Linked by Indiana Jones-style wooden suspension bridges and high walkways through the trees, the tents all look onto the water and enjoy the shade of the canopy. Once you’ve learned to “walk like a model" (which is apparently the trick to negotiating the bouncy bridges), you can safely make your way to the open bar and dining area where eating breakfast on the open terrace surrounded by mahogany and ebony trees starts the day off on the right note. You can then either choose to travel to the falls and partake of frenetic activity there or remain in the locale and enjoy some r&r, visits to the village and boat cruises. Birdlife is plentiful here but aside from hippo and the odd croc, this is not a wildlife destination.
Islands of Siankaba lies between the Victoria Falls and Chobe and it makes a good stop-over for safaris into Botswana or Zambia. It is the furthest camp away from the falls (allow 1hour boat and car ride to get there) so while it’s fine if you just want to do a falls tour and perhaps a bungi jump, it’s not the best place if you want to spend a couple of days doing all the activities on offer.
What you will find here though is a sense of remoteness and “Africa time", an irresistible compulsion to let time slide by with the river and just relax.
