Victoria Falls - Livingstone camps - Sussi and Chuma
Sussi and Chuma
Sussi & Chuma were Livingstone’s two loyal helpers and the ones who made the great trek with his body from western Zambia to the coast of Tanzania. They travelled to England to attend his funeral in Westminster Abbey. The camp that takes their names is located on the Zambezi around 10km upstream from Victoria Falls. This part of the river is characterised by shallow rapids, islands and pools and the bush is supplemented by stands of jackalberry and palms.
There's a fresh kind of feel about this lodge which has chosen to go the very modern route of clean minamalism which may not appeal to the more rustic bush-lovers. However, nature is very much in evidence here. Cheeky vervet monkeys play on the balconies and the lodge's treetop design allows the unobstructed movement of wildlife below. The sound of the water is always there and there are numerous little spots to to just relax and enjoy this lovely spot.
The beautiful rondavels raised high in the canopy take attention to detail to a new level. There are delicious bath salts just to make sure that it is really hard to get out of that deep tub and there's even a gym box for those that are suffering from exercise cold-turkey. Of course, this helps to make space for the delicious meals that are par for the course.
The two "Chuma Houses" provide a private getaway for families or groups. This is great for people who need flexibility and appreciate the option to schedule their day as they wish. The houses are entirely independent and meals are prepared on site, where guests can have some input.
The lodge is located about 15km from Livingstone town so there is a short drive to see the falls, but if you allow yourself a couple of days here, you can also make the most of boat rides and fishing and just loitering by the pool. Boat rides here are quite fun, actually, as you skip down the shallow rapids dodging hippos and eddies.
Sussi & Chuma is the ideal choice for people that want some indulgence, peace and quiet and relaxation in between the frenetic falls activities. It is also a really good option for people wanting to spend a little longer in the area.
Includes full board accommodation, scheduled activities, soft drinks, beer, house wines and local spirits, park fees where applicable. Does not include special activities, premium wines, champagne and spirits, gratuities, items of a personal nature.
