Victoria Falls

On the 17th November 1855, David Livingstone was busy about his quest to find the source of the Zambezi when he came across the cavernous fault that causes the Zambezi to take a leap of 108m in spectacular style. He was prompted to note that it was pretty darn impressive, pondered upon the change from a calm and sultry river to an angry, aggressive cascade within a matter of seconds and named the Falls after a woman, his Queen in fact. The locals had long ago opted for the more literal name of Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “The Smoke that Thundersǃ?, after the cloud of spray cast hundreds of feet in the air above the noisy white water.

Today, Victoria Falls is a well known natural wonder which is regularly included on safaris to Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Falls actually straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, with the main part of the river toppling over the Zimbabwean side, from which the best views are obtained year round.

In addition to a fine soaking as you view the Falls, you can also enjoy a range of other activities here. The crazy people choose to throw themselves off the bridge with only a piece of elastic tied to their ankles, or charge down the white water of the gorge in little more than a large rubber duck. The more sane-minded opt for civilised gin and tonics on sundowner cruises or exploring the calm areas of the river by canoe. There is also a very special flight over the Falls known as “the flight of angels" after another piece of Livingstone poetry.

When visiting Victoria Falls, there are a number of accommodation options both on the Zimbabwean side and in Livingstone in Zambia. It is easy enough to cross over between the two countries (although there may be Visa costs). Some hotels and lodges are in town itself within easy walking distance of the Falls, some occupy lovely sites on the Zambezi on in the surrounding game park where there is the opportunity to see a bit of wildlife.

A day or two is normally sufficient to enjoy the Falls and a few of the activities on offer but make sure you discuss with us what there is to do so that we can allow enough time for you to take advantage of the activities that you are interested in.
