Victoria Falls camps - The Elephant Camp
The Elephant Camp
Located around 10km from Victoria Falls, The Elephant Camp offers a peaceful retreat for those that prefer to be based a little outside the bustling little town. The Camp is also one of the smallest in this area with only nine vast tents, each with their own deck and plunge pool and view across the Zambezi Valley.
There is not currently heaps of activities around the immediate conservancy so you’ll still need to drive into the Falls to enjoy rafting, bungi jumping, cruises etc. What is just around the corner is The Elephant Wallow where you can enjoy an elephant ride or simply a close encounter with an elephant. This may not appeal to everyone and it’s understandable if you regard the taming of wild animals for the benefit of tourists as rather distasteful. However, Wild Horizons (a family run company) take a very sane and altruistic approach and having visited the project, we feel that it’s worth another look.
As far as the camp itself is concerned, you won’t want for anything. The Zimbabwean staff are particularly welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. It’s not a rustic bushcamp but more of a contemporary safari camp in the style of South Africa where canvas is combined with sliding glass doors and there is a huge bathtub in addition to an outside shower. This is definitely “camping" in the loosest possible sense – very much for those that enjoy their creature comforts in style.
A major benefit of being located slightly away from the Falls is that you will be less bothered by the constant and not inconsiderable drone of helicopters and micro-lights. Shuttles are laid on to take you into town if you want to and there is the pleasure of being surrounded by bush, birds and animals if you don’t.
