South India itinerary: Tamil Nadu highlights

Each of our journeys in India is tailor-made to suit your own interests, preferred style of accommodation, pace of travel and budget. Using a private car and driver, the following is a suggestion for a trip to South India including some of Nadu’s incredible temples.

Fly to Chennai (Madras). Stay in the city or on the beach.

Enjoy a couple of days exploring colonial Madras, the incredible rock carvings and shore temple at Mahabalipuram, and Kanchipuram famed for its 7th to 15th century temples and silk production.

Head south to Pondicherry. Take a guided tour of this former French territory and Auroville where the township’s international community devotes its’ time to meditation and ‘green’ industries.

Continue to Tanjore. Visit the 1000-year-old Brihadishwara or ‘Big Temple’ and discover the age-old methods of bronze casting before viewing some of the finest examples of Chola bronze sculpture in the museum.

Drive to the Chettinad region via Trichy. Join pilgrims and climb to the Rock Fort Temple, watch religious ceremonies on the banks of the Cauvery and visit the river island temple, Srirangam.

Staying in one of Chettinad’s restored former merchant homes, take a heritage walk with your guide, join locals at a village shandi or market, browse for antiques and feast on spicy Chettiar cuisine.

Drive to Madurai. Join the throngs of devotees at the amazing Sri Meenakshi Temple, visit the vast markets and take a sobering tour of the Gandhi Museum.

Head to the hills for a few days relaxation in the cool hills at Rajakkad or fly from Madurai to Chennai for your international flight home.
