Each of our journeys in India is tailor-made to suit your own interests, preferred style of accommodation, pace of travel and budget. Using a private car, driver and guides the following is a suggestion of how a trip might look if you’d like to walk and stay in comfort in the foothills of the Indian Himalaya.
Day 1-2 After arriving in Delhi spend a day or two exploring this fascinating capital. The centre of a succession of mighty empires and powerful kingdoms for centuries there's a wealth of history and culture to discover as well as fantastic cuisine and fabulous shopping - some of the best markets in India are found here.
Day 3-7 Take an overnight train from Delhi to Kathgodam and drive to Almora, the regional capital. From here, head into the hills with your private guide. Spend three or four days walking on quiet paths across fields, through forests and villages in the Kumaon foothills with views of the snow-capped mountains beyond. On the way you'll pass other small villages to experience local life for a deeper understanding of Himalayan culture and the spiritual nature of this untouched land. Each night will be spent in a simple but cosy Shakti Kumaon village house, authentic village houses off the beaten track with all modern comforts that offer the chance to experience the local customs and way of life of this stunning Himalayan location. Delicious meals will be prepared by your own cook who comes with you. The entire experience is one of understated rustic luxury.
Day 8 Walk to the road head and drive to the remote Himalayan retreat, 360’ Leti. The final approach is a further one hour walk along a mountain trail. Each of the four cottages has been built using local techniques and materials such as dry stone walls and has a private outdoor sitting area with a space for a small bonfire on colder nights. It's the ultimate Himalayan hideaway.
Day 9-11 Spend the next couple of days taking gentle strolls around your mountain retreat, chilling out in a planter’s chair while soaking up the views, or taking longer more challenging guided hikes to the Ramganga River, local shrines, waterfalls and beyond. Yoga and massages can also be arranged.
Day 12 Drive to Kathgodam and take the train back to Delhi.
