The best time to visit Kenya depends on the kind of holiday you are looking for. In brief though, here's a guide to the best times for the best experiences:
The wildebeest migration comes through the Masai Mara between July and October. This is when thousands of animals arrive en-masse and there's a better chance of seeing river crossings, but bear in mind that the Mara has excellent game all year round so you can also visit between December and late March or in June and still be happy as larry. We'd avoid April/May and November when the rains can turn the roads into quagmires and make long game drives rather soggy affairs. Check out the exceptional wildlife experience in the Mara.
For other wildlife areas in northern Kenya, such as Samburu, Meru or Laikipia, the rains don't spoil your safari, but may make it more of an adventure to find wildlife. The best times to visit for great game is the cooler dry season between July and October and the hotter dry season of December to March.
The Kenyan coast is at its best between late November and March or late July to early October. March and April tend to be the hottest times and the rains come in late April to early July, and again in late October to November. August tends to be the busiest tourist season. More information on Lamu in the north and Diani in the south.
There are many advantages to travelling outside the popular peak times, and Kenya has such a diverse ecology that it's possible to find a great place to go no matter what time of year you want to travel.
