Amber Mountain National Park

Amber Mountain National Park lies around 30 km south of the town of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) and is easily accessible by road from there. This park, with it’s 25 odd species of mammal, numerous endemic birds and stunning primary forest is well worth a visit as part of a larger exploration of the north of Madagascar.

Like most of Madagascar’s parks access is along a network of well defined pathways on a number of loops of varying lengths – anything from short jaunts of an hour or two, to full day walks for those who want to climb to the top of the mountain. Expect decent sightings of lemurs on most of the loops, although given how mobile they are, how good is always a matter of serendipity. With luck though you stand a good chance of encountering Sanford's brown lemur, crowned lemur, lesser bamboo lemur among others.

The park is also interspersed with a number of waterfalls that hold great significance in local culture.
