Quirimbas Archipelago camps - Quilalea
Situated in the southern sector of the Quirimbas Archipelago, Quilálea Island, a 35 hectar marine sanctuary offers the ultimate in seclusion and privacy, with the only residents being the hotel guests and staff.
The island is lovely and the staff friendly and helpful. It is great to just sit on the beach on relax for a few days. There were lots of activities to do such as diving, snorkelling, fishing and fly fishing. The food is amazing, particularly when the owners are there! Transferring into the island by helicopter is a wonderful way to arrive and saves a whole load of time.
Unlike the rest of the Quirimbas Archipelago, Quilálea is malarie-free. All the water on the island is provided via a de-salination plant and stored in subterranean tanks, hence there is no open water on the island and nowhere for mosquitos to breed.
Sencar, Quilalea's neighbouring island, remains untouched and uninhabited, although day excursions and picnics are encouraged and perhaps slightly over sold. It is 75 hectares in extent and has a coral rag exterior and a mangrove swamp interior. Sencar offers only rudimentary beaches, but is brilliant for sea birds. Samango monkeys have also made their homes here, though no one knows quite how they arrived there or how they survive in the absence of fresh water.
