Arusha National Park camps - Twiga Lodge
Twiga Lodge is a relaxed little lodge on the edge of Arusha National Park with super views of Mount Meru from the gardens. Twiga is the Swahili name for giraffe, who are frequent visitors to the lodge, pushing through the hedge to get to the manicured lawns.
The main lodge is built in traditional African bush home style, white-washed walls with high beams and thatched roof, and with lovely big verandas. The flowers of enormous blue agapanthas line the drive and fruit trees dot the lawns attracting naughty vervet monkeys. In a corner of the garden a game viewing platform overlooks Arusha National Park and has views of Kilimanjaro so you can sit in comfort watching colobus monkeys in the trees, birds and stunning butterflies – and even occasionally a passing elephant.
The four simple and homely rooms are decorated using locally sourced fabrics in bold and bright African colours, furnished with traditional pieces and artefacts designed by local artists and mosquito nets hanging over the beds. Each room is fitted with fan, fridge and television and has an en-suite bathroom with a shower and bath.
Meals at Twiga are a real treat and the lodge prides itself on producing the very best in home cooking prepared from freshly picked vegetables, tropical fruits and herbs some of which come from their own garden. Meals are usually taken with your hosts in the dining room or on the balcony overlooking the grounds but a private table can be set up in the garden for a romantic candle-lit dinner under the stars.
Paul and Erika who own and run Twiga are wonderfully enthusiastic and relaxed hosts; welcoming and hospitable, the wine flows freely and the food and stories are plentiful. Paul will take you for walks into the nearby communal farmland (the lodge is not isolated or remote so don’t expect to be far away from people) or the couple are happy to leave you relaxing in a hammock in the garden if you prefer. Close at hand, Arusha National Park offers great game viewing including the chance to view flamingo up close while taking a canoe on the lake.
