Karatu camps - Ngorongoro Farmhouse
Ngorongoro Farmhouse is in Ololdukan, about 4kms from the Ngorongoro Conservation area and located with great views of Oldeani. This is a good option as a place to base yourself to visit the Ngorongoro Crater if you dont like the idea of the very large, impersonal or excruciatingly expensive lodges on the Crater Rim itself. To get to the Crater Rim takes about 40 minutes and you should allow a further 40 or so to get to the Crater floor.
This is a working farm with lots of pigs, free range chickens, ducks, rabbits, lambs and cows. Fruit and vegetables are grown and apart from the fish imported from the coast, it aims to be pretty much self sufficient. Alongside being a working farm , this is also a coffee plantation, so your coffee really is freshly roasted. There are essentially 3 camps made up of 13 private cottages all scattered among the coffee plantation - each is private, large and light with high vaulted ceilings which makes them feel even more spacious. Decorated in an old colonial style, using local materials, and with billowing mosquito nets hanging from the four poster beds, they're comfortable and clean and understated. They all have their own bathrooms, with shower and bath though there's unlikely to be quite enough hot water to fill the latter.
The main lodge buidling houses the restaurant, coffee room where you can grind your own beans and televison area. On one side there is a large terrace overlooking the manicured gardens, and a swimming pool on the other.
This is a good place to look at if you're trying to keep costs down and is a good option for families, just do be aware that in peak season if all the cottages are full, there can be quite a crowd here.
