Tortuguero National Park & Caribbean Coast

ABOUT TORTUGUERO NATIONAL PARK

Nesting turtles, marine parks and fantastic wildlife

Nesting turtles is the big draw in Tortuguero. Of the planet’s seven species of sea turtles, six nest in Costa Rica and four lay their eggs here. These black-sand hatchlings have been continually monitored since 1955 in the longest running conservation program of its kind.

The Tortuguero National Park comprises 312 km sq of coastal park and 520km sq marine area and is the Caribbean’s most important breeding ground for the green sea turtle (Chelondia mydas) which pleasingly have been steadily increasing in numbers here.

But Tortuguero and the Caribbean Coast is far more than just turtles. Sloths and howler monkeys inhabit the treetops, frogs and iguanas make a living amongst the roots while the might tarpon and endangered manatee swim the waters.

The famed Canales de Tortuguero are quite the introduction too. Created to connect a series of natural lagoons and slow-flowing rivers in 1969 this engineering masterstroke allows inland navigation through a myriad of waterways and allows unfettered access to a remarkable ecosystem.

Walking is somewhat limited due to the watery nature of the environment with only a single, muddy 2 km loop through the forest although it can be exceedingly rewarding. Taking to the water in boat or canoe gives much greater range and accessibility to the birds and beasts.

BEST TIME TO VISIT TORTEGUERO NATIONAL PARK & THE CARIBBEAN COAST

Visitors are allowed to check the turtle rookeries at night from March to October – late July to the end of August being prime time – to observe eggs being laid or hatching. A licenced guide must accompany all visitors and flashlights and photography are not permitted due to the turtle’s extreme sensitivity to ambient light so you can be assured that the welfare of the wildlife is taken very seriously.

With up to an astonishing 6 metres of rain a year recorded in the north, ‘humid’ is the driest word that could be honestly used to describe Tortuguero. There is no dry season although it does rain less in February, March and October.

Enjoyed EVERY second of an action- packed two weeks in Kenya. Asante Sana👏

"This was my fourth safari booked with Natural High and, as previously, it surpassed my expectations. Vanessa’s Itinerary was spot on - the three camps were very different but all were spectacular with food to die for, wonderful staff, friendly, knowledgeable and great driver/guides. I could go on and on - it was perfect, and the icing on the whole trip was tracking, and finding a pack of Wild Dogs - the reason for going😃
Already saving for a 5th trip and will DEFINITELY book with Natural High - they are the Best!"

Morroco was a pleasant surprise

"This was certainly not our first trip with natural high.
As any other trip, organization was great, ie pick up, vehicles, local guides, food, all well done.
I now have a different opinion of the country and people."
