Nepal's Himalaya

Exploring Nepal's Annapurna and the Khumbu

The Annapurna Himalaya

Forming part of the Greater Himalaya, the Annapurna range provides a stunning backdrop to a stay in Pokhara or the basis for a variety of awe-inspiring walks and treks in the region.

It is broken into groups of massifs divided by glaciers and rivers draining down from the Tibetan plateau with an incredible nine peaks over 7000m (22 965ft), dominated by Annapurna 1 at 8091m (26 545ft).

Translated from Sanskrit, Annapurna means goddess of the harvest and the fertile valleys are immaculately tended by farmers. The southern slopes of the massif receive high rainfall during the monsoon and are covered in lush deciduous forest, the upper slopes are coniferous, while the mountains’ rain shadow effect keep the high valleys dry and barren.

Though wildlife was once abundant it has been driven to remote corners by land clearing. On our tailor-made private Annapurna treks you may see rhesus and langur monkeys, and if you are lucky jungle cat and wild boar, but black bear, mountain goat and blue sheep at higher altitudes remain elusive. Snow leopards hide in the highest reaches. 440 bird species have been recorded in the region and migratory varieties take refuge here en route to and from Tibet.

Trekking with your private guide along ancient pathways that criss-cross the region you will come across different ethnic groups who still wear their own distinctive dress and speak their own language. The region is protected by the Annapurna  Conservation Area Project (ACAP) and your visit to the Annapurna includes a fee for projects that aim to protect the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

Fantastic Kenya 🇰🇪 Safari thanks Vanessa

"We stayed at three beautiful lodges; The Emakoko Nairobi National Park, Tortillis Camp Amboseli National Park and Kicheche Valley Camp Mara Conservation Area. Great food, great staff, great guides, great management, could not fault anything. Every pick up was on time and with a smile. Loved the ‘Captains Table’ at Kicheche. Highlight was the Ballon ride over the Mara - fantastic. We saw all that we hoped to see, Nairobi; lion, rhino, plains game Amboseli; elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo, plains game Mara; leopard, lion, elephant, cheetah, buffalo, plains game. In Nairobi we stayed at the Sarova Stanley which was also great, leaving a message on the mail board by the ‘Thorn Tree’. Key to our great safari was our travel consultant Vanessa Janion at Natural High who was fantastic. Yes we loved everything, thanks Vanessa 💖"

Very helpful and accomodating

"Very helpful and Catherine went out of her way to accommodate us. It was also short notice from our side and yet it all worked very well. Good advice was provided to us about where to stay en route and all queries promptly answered."

Phenomenal Safari which will certainly stay with us for years to come

"Our main contact, Rod, was extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of the Safari that we ultimately decided upon. We trusted his recommendations throughout and were certainly impressed by the trip. Whilst we were on Safari Rod was always there at the end of the phone, or email should we need him (which we did with a bit of a passport blip) and he did everything he could to help us out."
