Gangtey (Phobjikha) accommodation - Gangtey Lodge

Gangtey Lodge

The spectacular setting is a real draw at Gangtey Lodge, a contemporary lodge built from stone and wood to a design inspired by traditional Bhutanese farmhouses. From the informal lounge-restaurant there are knock-out views of the beautiful Gangtey Valley through its floor to ceiling windows while slouching in a leather sofa or over a bowl of soup at a long communal dining table. Two impressive fireplaces encased in local stone keep it nice and cosy and mean you can enjoy the pristine Bhutanese countryside all year round.

The 12 rooms are very natural looking (but not short of some luxurious trimmings), with stone floors, exposed brick walls, dark wooden beams and furniture dressed in a earthy tones. There’s a fireplace here too and feature windows with uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape and perfect for watching for shooting stars in the night sky.

As well as the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery you are also close to the over-wintering grounds of the rare black-necked cranes revered by local people and protected by law. During other months, when the birds aren't in residence, the lodge operates the first hot-air balloon flights in Bhutan offering fantastic views of the Nakay Chhu and Gay Chhu (rivers said to represent a snake and a boar), pine forests, farms, dzongs and Phobjikha village from the air.
