Bombay (Mumbai) accommodation - The Taj Mahal Palace
The Taj Mahal Palace
From the day it opened in 1903 The Taj Mahal Palace has been a landmark on Bombay’s harbour front and a leader in comfort, style and fine dining in the city. With fabulous views over the Gateway of India (actually completed 21 years later, so the hotel was the first sight that King George V and Queen Mary, various British governors and dignitaries saw on arriving in India!) and Back Bay, it has become an iconic monument in itself.
The hotel was so successful that it ran out of space for everyone to sleep and wine and dine so in the 1970’s a less than attractive Tower Wing extension was added, but the views over the sea or rooftops, room interiors and additional restaurants equal those in the Palace. Over the course of a century the hotel has amassed a diverse collection of paintings and works of art from massive Belgian chandeliers to Bastar tribal art from central India and successfully blends the heritage with the modern.
The 560 rooms are divided into numerous categories including 44 sumptuous suites with personal butler service, but all are extremely comfortable and share the same access to the wonderful Jiva Spa, swimming pool, steam room and sauna. Other facilities include a choice of seven restaurants and bars and a great shopping arcade where you can pick up maps, coffee table and guides books at the well-stocked Nalanda or a pair of leather hand-made chappals at Joy Shoes.
The hotel is very well located for sightseeing, shopping and trips to the caves and sculptures on Elephanta Island on launches that depart from the quayside opposite the hotel.
