Kanha National Park accommodation - Shergarh
Shergarh is small tented camp not far from Kanha’s Mukki Gate owned and run by experienced naturalist Jehan and his English wife, Katie. Both are hugely passionate about Kanha and all of its wildlife, and have an unfailing commitment to the environment, local community and sustainable tourism. They avoid taking the tiger-centric approach common in some other lodges and ensure that guests leave with a complete experience of Kanha. Their enthusiasm is infectious.
As well as jeep safaris with excellent naturalists they lead gentle walks into the park’s buffer zone, through the sal forest and along the bank of the Banjar River that forms the park boundary, to observe the area’s smaller wildlife. There are no fences so you never know what you might come across. Mountain bikes and a map of the local tracks are available so you can take off and explore the rural surroundings. Many tribal people were relocated when the national park was created but Jehan and Katie are keen to make sure they are not forgotten. For anyone who is interested they will arrange a walk to the village to visit some of the homes and families of their staff and the local school as well as the weekly market.
Accommodation is in six roomy tents with comfortable beds and a proper bathroom with plenty of water heated by clean-burning LPG. Rising at 5.30am doesn’t seem too bad when it’s with a pot of tea and biscuits before taking a jeep safari wrapped up in the thoughtfully provided blankets and hot water bottle to keep out the early morning cold . As the day warms a generous picnic breakfast and banana cake keep you going until fresh salads from the garden for lunch back at the camp. After a shorter afternoon safari, bird spotting at the camp or other activity dinner is a feast beneath the stars.
