Bihar

Bihar is traditional India, still living as much of the country did 50 years ago – men still wear the traditional dhoti outside the cities, impressive Mughal monuments stand forgotten and the annual Sonepur Mela attracts millions of pilgrims to bathe in the Ganges and attend India’s largest and most colourful cattle fair.

The state capital, Patna, was one of the major centres of the East India Company, enriched by opium and indigo plantations, and now boasting a superb museum as well as fascinating mosques and temples.

Previous unrest in the state and lack of somewhere decent to stay means so far it has only been visited by pilgrims and a few backpackers but now, sailing along the Ganges on private passenger boat means it's possible for intrepid travellers to get to know the region in relative comfort.
