Bihar accommodation - ABN Rajmahal
The Rajmahal is owned and managed by the pioneering Assam Bengal Navigation Company. The Indo-British joint venture has been successfully operating long-distance river journeys in India - where others have tried and failed - since 2003. Each ship is crewed by highly experienced boatmen and a wonderful team of gentle staff who will accompany you on daily trips into the surrounding landscape to visit festivals, cities, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries and other places of interest.
Larger than her sister ships Sukapha and Charaidew, the Rajmahal has 22 air-conditioned cabins - 14 spacious twin/double cabins on the upper deck and 4 twin/double cabins on the main deck. An absolute boon to single travellers, there are also 4 single cabins on this deck for which there is no supplement. Each cabin has a small but perfectly adequate en-suite shower room, and French balcony for enjoying views of the passing scenery. As with the other ships in the fleet, there is a comfortable saloon and bar and a dining room, together with a vast canopied sundeck and plenty of room for reclining with a sundowner at the end of the day. A small spa offers a wide range of treatments. Most importantly, Rajmahal has been specially designed with extra-shallow draught to cope with the river conditions.
Buffet meals of Assamese (milder than most Indian cuisine) and continental dishes are shared around communal tables in the dining room on the lower deck. Though not luxurious, the service is kind and attentive and the ship is by far the most comfortable way to travel this part of India. A variety of itineraries are available lasting from 4 to 10 nights with a focus on the culture and history of remote Bihar and Bengal on Ganges and Hugli river journeys. These can easily be combined with travel to other parts of India through a network of local flights.
All meals and shared guided excursions. Price is per person per night.
